Let’s talk about SEO and what it exactly is. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is something that’s vital to making your website a success or not. If you’ve read anything about internet marketing, you’ve probably seen references to SEO. So let’s take a deeper look to explain it.
How do search engines work?
Every website has a rank in the eyes of search engines. The giants of the search engine market are of course Google and Bing. As website owners we want the algorithms of these engines to think that our website is the best match for what people look for. How do they know to match your website with a specific search term? That’s where keywords come to play.
Let’s say somebody is searching Google for “landscaper in Miami”. If you’re site contains this term and is optimized well, your website might be among the first answers that Google show the searcher. Now think about how many people search for that every day and you’ll know how powerful a good rank can be.
What does SEO do?
Search engine optimization tries to take into account the variables that search engines use and optimizes your site’s content to make the search engines like it more. With the amount of websites out there, just writing an article and hoping it’s going to rank high is not an option these days. You need to make sure your content ticks all the boxes that help it stand out.
By successfully doing so, we can drastically improve the amount of traffic and income your website generates for you. So how does it work? There are two types of SEO. On-site and off-site.
On-site SEO is basically what you think it would be. It’s optimization that’s done on your website. This includes things like using the right amount of keywords in your content, using relevant tags and metadata, making sure your website structure is correct, generating sitemaps that search engines can read and so on. SEO is an ever evolving art as the algorithms of search engines are in constant change. This means that you constantly have to make corrections and adapt to stay ahead of the game.
Off-site SEO is everything that is done outside of your website but with the idea to boost your website’s rankings. The biggest part of this is acquiring backlinks. Backlinks are basically references to your page with context. Coming back to our landscaping example, let’s say a popular high authority site posts your website’s link and writes about you providing great landscaping services in Miami. This gives power to your site in the eyes of search engines. However, this has to be done in specific ways to have the right effect. Off-site SEO focuses on getting your backlinks to the right places, in the right way.
